SAENGER Galería is pleased to present for Untitled Art Miami Beach 2024 a group show by Rose Barberat (b. Jura, France), Scott Reeder (b. 1970, Battle Creek, MI), and Mark Whalen (b. 1982, Sydney, Australia), featuring a selection of paintings and sculptures defined by a pop aesthetic, the use of the narrative and fiction, cultural critique and sharp humor.
The exhibition project comprises a selection of Rose Barberat’s figurative and realistic paintings, conceived as objects of contemplation, that question contemporary issues of representation. Using references to cinema, literature and, more generally, with fiction, her work discusses the idea of staging and provokes a shift, a gap of our impression of reality. Alongside, Scott Reeder’s outstanding series, The Surrealist Still Life Paintings, which draws from the traditions of still-life to project emotional affect and social relationships onto inanimate objects —such as bread and butter going to the beach— which he paints in brightly colored, cartoon-like settings. In dialogue with a selection of Mark Whalen’s distinctive table-based aluminium sculptures, of exaggerated facial characteristics, that celebrate daily life and represent the vast spectrum of human emotion, addressing the comical as well as the weight of social anxieties.
