Time on my hands by Mark Whalen
at Casa Gilardi November 8 - December 2, 2023 Mark Whalen’s latest show “Time on my hands”, is his first solo exhibition in Mexico City. Mark’s versatile and interdisciplinary practice is characterized by his distinctive models rendered in bold, expansive fields of color. Casa Gilardi’s playfulness: its deep reds the color of Mexican sweets, the swimming pool’s magenta wall added for pleasure, and brightly painted walls smoothed down to give the illusion of light, is reflected in Whalen’s florescent hues, comical facial characteristics, and body language. Nostalgia de izquierda. Fisuras a un loop político-estético
Curated by Natalia de la Rosa at Level 2 March 10 - April 29, 2023 In the general discourse of global art, regional art is often described as "political," but these characterizations are linked to a notion of militancy that has lapsed in the face of other processes, such as anti-patriarchal and anti-colonial ones, which break down the traditional dichotomous notion of left and right. Faced with this panorama, we present the work of four artists: Tatyana Zambrano (Medellín), the collective Depois do fim da arte (São Paulo), Arhat Alejandro (Michoacán-Guadalajara) and Alfredo Bojórquez (Mérida-CDMX), to rethink the ways in which political symbols are reappropriated, put in crisis and reformulated, and thus influence the present and the possibilities that exist to address this condition from a critical memory. In this second Habeica exhibition in collaboration with SAENGER Galería, the artist continues to develop a narrative in which he shows us his reality through still and moving images. Habeica creates a story that is both probable and yet impossible
to verify, similar to a novel, in Napoleon Habeica's photographs, videos and installations we attend events of which we can only appreciate fragments, with partial views and jumps in the time that we are invited to participate in the stories that the artist tells us about his self-exile.
