Benjamín Torres has a Bachelor in Visual Arts, by the National School of Plastic Arts, UNAM, Mexico City. He also took Drawing workshops at The Art Student’s League of New York, New York, USA. As well as a Contemporary Art Seminar with Tadashi Uei Horibata from the University of Kyoto, Mexico - Japan. He is trained in the field of sculpture and later directed his work towards experimentation, within a more open and post-conceptual concept of three-dimensional practice. He finds his references in the collection, dismantling and analysis of certain devices of consumer culture and media information. The methods used in the artist’s production come from the post-avant-garde scene: appropriation, intervention, re-contextualization and assemblage, which he uses to give new meaning to both global cultural phenomena and those of his immediate environment. Within his most recent projects, Torres formally and conceptually explores the relationship between public space, sculpture, writing and graphics.
He has participated in multiple solo exhibitions, among which stand out ¡No trabajes jamás!, Pequod Co, Ciudad de México, 2021; Los efectos a largo plazo son aún desconocidos, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Ciudad de México, 2013; Polvo de un sol distante, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Oaxaca, México; Diagramática, Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Ciudad de México, 2011. Collectively he has particpated in Bitácoras, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Querétaro, Colección Fundación Casa Wabi, Ciudad de México, 2022; Colibríes / huitziltin / ts’unu’ob.
His work is part of important private and public collections such as, Colección JUMEX, Ciudad de México; ESPAC, Ciudad de México; The Spencer Collection, New York Public Library, Nueva York, EUA; Fundación RAC, Pontevedra, España; USC Fischer Museum of Art, Los Ángeles, EUA; Museo de Arte de Sonora, Sonora, México; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, Oaxaca, México amongst others.
