Biography

Lives and works in Mexico City

The practice of Alfredo Gallegos Mena is rooted in observing everyday scenarios and experiences. He introduces unconventional materials that challenge the traditional forms of painting, sculpture, and drawing. His research focuses on creating works with transformed elements such as clay, wood, pharmaceutical packaging, organic matter, wax, matchboxes, and various restoration materials; each material is treated as a source of information.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the Faculty of Arts and Design at National Autonomous University of Mexico (2009-2013). He also completed a Diploma in Curatorial Practices at the Academy of San Carlos in 2014. He has worked as a curator for Colectivo Tres and Fundación Novangardo. Among his most recent solo exhibitions are Construcción Pictórica Materia (Salón ACME No. 10, 2023, curated by Ana Castella) and Clareou (Saenger Galería, 2022, curated by Christian Barragán).

His work has been featured in major international group exhibitions, including the Tijuana Triennial: I. Internacional Pictórica (Centro Cultural Tijuana, 2024 and 2021), the XXII International Art Biennial of Cerveira (Vila Nova de Cerveira, 2022), the XIX Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial (Rufino Tamayo Museum of International Contemporary Art, 2022), the LI National Encounter of Young Art (Museum of Art of Celaya, 2021), the XII Alfredo Zalce National Painting and Printmaking Biennial, the ABLi Lima Art Biennial (Peru, 2020), and FAMA Monterrey.

Among his awards, Alfredo Gallegos Mena received the Acquisition Prize at the Cerveira Biennial. He also earned Honorable Mentions at the XLI National Encounter of Young Art and the XII Alfredo Zalce National Painting and Printmaking Biennial.
